FoundMoney by Kovet
FoundMoney Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy
Version 1.1 · Effective October 20, 2026. FoundMoney-specific terms for Kovet's free unclaimed-money search. FoundMoney searches the official state unclaimed-property databases for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These terms sit alongside Kovet's general Terms of Service and Privacy Policy; where they differ for FoundMoney, this document controls for FoundMoney. This is the canonical version and supersedes all earlier FoundMoney Terms/Privacy drafts. Launch note: this document is pending attorney review, and no fee will be charged until that review is complete. Where any state law is stricter than this document, the state law wins. Contact: [email protected].
Read this first — three facts that never change:
- Kovet is a private company, not a government agency, and is not affiliated with any state, any state unclaimed-property office, the U.S. Treasury, or NAUPA.
- You can always claim your money yourself, for free, directly from the state that holds it. Our service is optional help with searching and filing.
- Unclaimed money does not expire. States hold it indefinitely. Anyone who pressures you with a deadline to sign or pay is not describing how this works.
How we store your search data — plain-English summary. We collect five things, and nothing else, for a search. Required: your full legal name, your email address, and the states you have lived in. Optional: former names, and your current city and state. We never collect a Social Security number, a government ID, your date of birth, or bank or card details — if a state needs those to pay a claim, you enter them yourself on the official state website, never on ours. Data lives on Kovet's systems hosted in the United States, encrypted in transit and at rest, behind individual staff accounts with multi-factor authentication. It is used only to run your search and contact you about it; it is never sold and never used to train AI models. Marketing contact happens only if you separately consent. Retention follows the schedule in Part C. You can ask to see, correct, or delete your data at any time via [email protected], subject to the one legal-retention exception in Part C (signed finder agreements, invoices and claim/payment records are kept 7 years from claim resolution).
Part A — Terms and Conditions 1. Who we are and what the service is. "FoundMoney," "we," "us," and "Kovet" mean the Kovet business operating the FoundMoney service. "You" means the person using the service. FoundMoney provides a free search of the official unclaimed-property databases maintained by the 50 states and the District of Columbia, using only the information listed in Part B, Section 1. We report possible matches and — only if you separately agree in writing — help you prepare and submit a claim to the state holding the property.
2. We do not hold your money. Unclaimed money is held only by the state (or, in some cases, a federal agency). We never receive, hold, or control it. The state decides every claim, and the state pays the owner directly.
3. No guarantee of findings or payment. A search result is a possible match based on the information you provided, not proof that money is yours. Names are shared by many people, state records contain errors, and a state may deny a claim. We do not guarantee that any property exists, that a search will find anything, that a claim will be approved, any amount, or any timeline. State processing commonly takes 30 to 180 days, and estate matters can take 6 to 12 months or longer.
4. Your free alternative — required disclosure. You may search for and claim unclaimed property yourself, at no charge, through the official website of the state that holds it, or through the state links provided on unclaimed.org (the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators). You do not need us, or anyone, to file a claim. Where a state requires specific wording for this notice — for example, New York requires this disclosure in every solicitation, in bold type of at least 12 points in the printed agreement — the state-required wording in your signed agreement controls.
5. Eligibility — 18 or older, searching for yourself. You must be 18 or older to use FoundMoney. You may only search for yourself, for a deceased person whose estate you are legally authorised to act for, or for another adult with their written permission. Searching for another person without authority is prohibited; we may close the request and delete the data.
6. Accuracy of the information you provide. You agree that the information you provide is accurate, complete, and yours to provide, and that you will correct it if it changes or is wrong. Search quality depends entirely on it: a misspelled name, a missing former name, or a missing state can mean a real match is not found, and we are not responsible for a missed match caused by inaccurate or incomplete information.
7. The search is free. No upfront fees, ever. There is no charge to run a search and receive results, and we never charge any fee upfront for FoundMoney. Browsing the site, submitting the search form, or receiving results creates no fee obligation of any kind.
8. The 10% finder's fee — only under a separate signed agreement, only after you are paid. A fee exists only if all of these are true: (a) we found property we believe is yours; (b) we disclosed the nature and, where known, the value of that property to you before you signed; (c) you signed a separate written Finder Agreement with us; (d) the state has actually paid you for that property; and (e) charging the fee is lawful for that property (Section 9). Only then is our fee 10% of the amount the state actually paid you for that property — or the maximum that state's law allows, if lower. The lower cap always wins. We never charge for a denied claim, never charge on property you claim without a signed agreement, and we invoice you after verifying the state's payment, showing the amount paid, the fee calculation, and the net you keep. Payment for a fee is handled by our payment processor; we never receive or store your full card or bank account number.
9. Launch scope — the paid service covers 29 states only, and only property past its waiting period. Finder rules are set by the state holding the property, not the state you live in now. At launch, the paid (fee-based) service is offered only for property held by these 29 jurisdictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Even inside the launch states, a fee is available only where it is lawful for that property: the fee must be within the state's cap, and the state must not require a finder registration, licence, or certification that Kovet does not hold.
No consumer service outside the 29 states. For property held by any state outside the 29 listed above, FoundMoney does not offer this consumer service: there is no search-and-guidance engagement, no fee agreement, and no fee for that property. If a search identifies such property, we will tell the customer, as information only, which state holds it, so they can claim it directly from that state's official unclaimed-property website themselves, free of charge. In those states, paid claim representation is available only through licensed professionals; FoundMoney Pro is a separate professional offering, under separate terms, and is not covered by these consumer terms.
Scope is decided by the state holding the property, not by where you live. Anyone may submit a search request — we only learn which state holds a property after searching — and the scope above then applies property by property: a fee can arise only on property held by one of the 29 listed jurisdictions and otherwise qualifying under Sections 8 and 9.
Waiting periods — only property past the wait is fee-eligible. Most launch states: 24 months after the property was delivered to the state. Virginia: 36 months. New Mexico: 48 months. A finder agreement signed before the applicable period has run is void in those states, and we will not offer one — we will point you to the free claim instead, charging $0. Indiana ceiling: in Indiana the total finder fee for a claim may not exceed $5,000, even if 10% of the amount paid would be more; the lower amount always applies.
10. What a Finder Agreement must contain. A Finder Agreement with us will be in writing and signed by you, and will state: a description of the property and the name of the state holding it; the gross value, where known; the fee in percent and, where calculable, in dollars; the net amount you keep; the free-claim disclosure in Section 4; your duty to tell us within 10 days of receiving a state payment and to share proof of payment (such as the state's payment letter); your authorisation for the state to release that claim's status to us; and the claim number, once filed. Where a state prescribes a form, notarisation, or extra wording, we use it. If any part of an agreement exceeds what a state allows, that agreement is void to the extent the state provides, and we will not enforce it.
11. Your duties after signing. If you sign a Finder Agreement, you agree to provide any documents the state requires directly on the official state website or through the state's own process, to respond to state requests, and to notify us of payment as described in Section 10. We will never ask you to send identity documents, a Social Security number, or bank details to us — and never by text message or social media.
12. Cancellation. You may cancel a search request at any time, free of charge, and ask us to delete your data under Part B. You may cancel a Finder Agreement within any cancellation or rescission period your state provides, and in any event before a claim is submitted on your behalf, by written notice to [email protected]. Cancellation after a claim has been submitted does not cancel the claim with the state; we will tell you what, if anything, remains outstanding.
13. Marketing contact — only with your separate consent. Submitting a search is not consent to marketing. We will contact you about your own search and, if you sign one, your claim — those are service messages, not marketing. We will send marketing about Kovet products and services only if you separately consent (for example, by checking an unchecked consent box on the form), and every marketing email carries an unsubscribe link. You may opt out at any time by using that link or emailing [email protected]; opting out never affects your search, a claim, or a fee already lawfully agreed.
14. Acceptable use. You agree not to misuse the service, submit false information, impersonate another person, submit bulk or automated requests, attempt to access another customer's records, interfere with the service's operation, circumvent access controls or rate limits, or use results to harass or solicit any person named in them. We may refuse or close requests that breach this section.
15. Intellectual property. The FoundMoney service, including its website, content, reports, and software, is the property of Kovet and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Search results and reports we provide to you are licensed for your own personal use in pursuing your own claim; they may not be resold or redistributed without our written permission. Kovet's and FoundMoney's names and logos are Kovet's marks and may not be used in a way that suggests government affiliation or endorsement. Nothing in the service transfers any ownership of state records, which remain the property of the relevant state.
16. No legal, tax, or financial advice. We are not lawyers, accountants, or financial advisers. Recovered property can have tax consequences, and estate claims can require probate or court documents. We may describe general processes, but you should consult a qualified professional about your own situation.
17. Disclaimers. The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee specific findings, amounts, claim outcomes, or business or personal outcomes from using the service. Search results are informational assessments based on the information you provided and the state databases as they exist when searched; state databases change, and a later search may produce different results.
18. Limitation of liability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kovet's total liability arising from your use of FoundMoney will not exceed the amounts you paid to Kovet in the twelve months preceding the claim, or $100 for the free service, whichever is greater — matching Kovet's general Terms of Service. We are not liable for a state's decision, delay, or error, for property claimed by another rightful owner, or for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your right to challenge an agreement as excessive or unjust where state law gives you that right.
19. Governing law, disputes, changes, and contact. Please contact us first at [email protected] — most fee questions are resolved by showing the state's payment record and the calculation. These FoundMoney terms are governed by the same governing law as Kovet's general Terms of Service at kovet.ai/terms/, and a Finder Agreement will state any governing law the holding state requires for that agreement. You keep any right a state gives you to have an agreement reviewed by that state's unclaimed-property administrator or a court, and nothing here waives it. We may update these terms from time to time; the version in force when you submit a search or sign an agreement governs that search or agreement, material changes will be posted with a new effective date, and continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance — but no change will retroactively increase a fee or extend retention of data already collected. Questions about these terms: [email protected].
Scam warning, from us. Unclaimed-money scams are common. We will never ask you to pay an upfront fee to "release" money, never ask for your Social Security number, date of birth, government ID, bank login, or gift-card payment, and never claim money expires soon. If a message saying it is from us does any of those things, it is not from us — do not respond, and tell us at [email protected].
Part B — Privacy Policy This policy explains what we collect for a FoundMoney search, why, how it is stored and protected, how long it is kept, who it is shared with, and the rights you have over it. It is the FoundMoney companion to Kovet's general Privacy Policy at kovet.ai/privacy/, and the two are written to be read together.
1. What we collect — the complete list, and what we never collect. For a search we collect only:
Required: your full legal name; your email address; and the states you have lived in. Optional: former names (including maiden names and prior legal names); and your current city and state.
That is the whole list for the search. We also keep the records of our dealing with you — your results, our correspondence about your request, and, if you sign one, your Finder Agreement and fee records — so we can prove what was agreed and paid. Lawful basis: your consent and our legitimate interest in answering and fulfilling your request.
We never collect: a Social Security number; a government ID number; your date of birth; or bank, card, or account details. States require some of those things to process and pay a claim. When they do, you enter them yourself on the official state website — they are never entered on, sent to, or stored by FoundMoney. If any form claiming to be ours asks for something on this list, stop: it is not our form, and you should tell us at [email protected].
2. Why we use it. Only to: run the search you requested across the official state databases; contact you with results and about your request; prepare and track a claim if you signed a Finder Agreement; calculate and collect a fee that is actually due; comply with law; and keep the service secure. We never sell personal data, and customer data is never used to train AI models. Marketing use requires your separate consent under Part A, Section 13.
3. Cookies and tracking. FoundMoney, like kovet.ai, sets no non-essential cookies and runs no advertising or analytics trackers. If that ever changes, we will update this policy first and ask for consent where the law requires it. Basic server and security logs (IP address, browser details, timestamps) are kept to secure and operate the service, as described in Part C.
4. Who we share it with. Only as far as the job requires:
The state holding the property — only the claim details you authorised, and only when you signed an agreement asking us to help file. Service providers under contract — our hosting provider, Google (email and workspace), and our payment processor, who process data on our behalf under contract, only on our instructions, and must protect it to a standard at least equal to this policy. Nothing is shared with third parties for their own marketing. Law and safety — where the law compels it, or to prevent fraud or harm. Where the law allows, we will tell you before disclosing.
No other sharing. In particular, search data is not shared with other Kovet products or brands for their own marketing.
5. How we store and protect it — United States hosting.
Location: Kovet's systems are hosted in the United States. Where European or UK personal data is transferred to us, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK equivalent) where an adequacy decision does not apply, as in Kovet's general Privacy Policy. Encryption: data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest with our hosting and storage providers. Access control: individual staff accounts — no shared logins — with multi-factor authentication. Access to customer records is limited to staff working on that request (need-to-know), and access is logged. Working habits: staff work from the record system, not from personal email, personal devices, or spreadsheets kept outside it. Search data is not pasted into social-media messages or group chats — including the Facebook groups where many customers first find us. Secure intake: searches are submitted over the website's encrypted form. Never send us personal documents by ordinary email or Facebook message; if any are sent that way, we delete them. Backups: backups are encrypted and rotate out on the Part C schedule, so deleted records fall out of backups as they rotate.
6. If something goes wrong — breach notice. If we become aware of unauthorised access to personal data, we will investigate, contain it, and notify affected customers and any regulator whose notification law applies, within the time that law requires and without unreasonable delay. Notice will say what happened, what data was involved, what we are doing, and what you can do.
7. Children. FoundMoney is for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect data for a search about a person under 18. Property belonging to a minor is claimed by a parent or legal guardian through the state; contact us and we will point you to the free official route and delete any data sent to us about the minor.
Part C — Retention Schedule and Your Rights How long each kind of data is kept
How long each kind of data is kept
| Data | Purpose | Deleted or de-identified |
|---|---|---|
| Search data — no match found | Run the search; send results | Deleted 90 days after the search and follow-up window closes |
| Search data — match found, no signed finder agreement | Send results; allow you to return and proceed | Deleted 12 months after last contact / follow-up closes |
| Signed finder agreements, invoices and claim/payment records | Track the claim; prove the fee; legal and tax record-keeping | Retained 7 years from claim resolution, then deleted |
| Enquiries and correspondence (where not part of a record above) | Answer and fulfil your request | Deleted 12 months after last contact / follow-up closes |
| Server and security logs | Security and operation | 12 months, then deleted |
This is the single retention schedule for FoundMoney and it applies everywhere in this document. The 7-year period for signed finder agreements, invoices and claim/payment records replaces the earlier, shorter wording for those records, chosen because contract and tax record periods run longer. Shortening a period is always permitted; extending one for data already collected requires a policy update and, where the law requires, your consent. A legal hold for an active dispute pauses deletion for the records involved only.
Your rights — free, answered within one month Access: ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy in a portable, usable format. Correction: ask us to correct inaccurate data — a wrong name or a missing state can cause a missed match, so we welcome corrections. Erasure — deletion on verified request at any time: ask us to delete your data and we will do so, subject to this one legal-retention exception, stated plainly: signed finder agreements, invoices and claim/payment records must be retained for 7 years from claim resolution for legal and tax record-keeping, and are deleted after that period. Where that exception applies, we will tell you exactly what is being retained and why. Restrict or object: restrict or object to processing, and withdraw consent — including marketing consent — at any time. No penalty: exercising a right never changes a fee already lawfully agreed, and never bars you from claiming your money directly from the state.
Email [email protected] — that address reaches our privacy contact. We verify the requester is the data owner before releasing or deleting records, normally by replying from the email address on the request, and we will never ask for a Social Security number, ID number, or date of birth to do it. California residents: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in the CCPA/CPRA, and the rights above are extended to you on request. You may also complain to your local data protection authority or state attorney general.
